Dimensions: Length: 45" (114cm), Wingspan 34" (86cm)

Condition: Excellent – Except that the horizontal stabilizers
on the tail were accidentally sawed off and then reattached by
the Model Finisher in the Philippines.

Model History (The Short Story): My friend Jim Powroznik
helped me acquire this unfinished Douglas Factory/Marketing Aids
DC-8-61 Blank at the LAX International Airliner’s Show in the
summer of 2004. I then sent it to my friend Don Stevens at Airborne
for refinishing in the Philippines. I received it
back on April 9, 2005 and Once Again They Did a Terrific Job On
It – Except – for the damage noted in the Condition Section above
which I suspect was caused by Philippines Customs (looking for
contraband). The model finisher at Airborne Replicas did the best
they could in reattaching the stabilizers but it still is noticeable.
Unfortunately, it would require welding & repolishing to permanently
fix the stabilizers and eliminate all evidence of damage. Since
it was painted so beautifully I’m going to keep it as is and trade
away my other Trans Caribbean DC-8-61CF model which is in near
mint condition. Please see bottom of page if you want to read

Caribbean’s DC-8 History:
Trans Caribbean
Airways was an Original Factory Delivery Customer of the DC-8.
During the 1960s Trans Caribbean flew a number of routes to the
Caribbean from the USA. Based in New York, their "bread and
butter" routes were Idlewild (now JFK) – San Juan and Newark
– San Juan. Other Caribbean destinations included the U.S. Virgin
Islands, Haiti, Curacao & Aruba. TCA also flew out of Washington
– Dulles and Philadelphia to San Juan but the Philadelphia service
was discontinued due to economic conditions. All of these routes
were serviced primarily by the Douglas DC-8 and to a lessor extent
the Boeing 727 – both types of aircraft in Convertible Freighter
versions to accommodate a large demand for air freight as well
as passengers. Unfortunately, due to continued financial difficulties,
Trans Caribbean was merged into American Airlines in May 1971.
After the merger, TCA’s DC-8 fleet was quickly phased out (not
being in common with American’s fleet) and replaced by American’s
Boeing 707, 727 & 747 aircraft. Trans Caribbean was a "colorful"

Tree" Paint Scheme was one of the Most Beautiful Schemes
I have ever seen on the DC-8.

Model History (The Long Story): This
Model is one of Those "Dreams Come True" For Me. Back
in 1973 when I was first starting my collection I ordered a 1/100
Scale Trans Caribbean DC-8-61CF from Marketing Aids, who was then
the model maker for Douglas Aircraft. At the time I ordered it,
the manager told me that they were using the last set Trans Caribbean
Decals of any scale on my model. Well, this just added
to my excitement in getting this stunning livery on a DC-8-61.
I remember waiting & waiting and trying to be as patient as
a 17 year old boy could be and then it finally arrived. I opened
the box to find a Trans Caribbean DC-8-63CF model which just crushed
my enthusiasm for the model. I wanted the model to be exact and
a DC-8-63 is not the same as a DC-8-61! I called Marketing Aids
and they told me that there were no more decals left and converting
my DC-8-63 to a -61 would be time consuming and expensive. Also,
I checked every aviation history book and periodical (Aviation
Week, etc.) to see if Trans Caribbean by chance also flew the
-63 but unfortunately that never happened. Even though that model
was not correct I kept it for many years. Finally, in 1997 I sold
it and decided to hunt for the correct model at 1/100, 1/72 or
even better, 1/50 scale. When my friend Jim found this unfinished
blank in Summer 2004 I knew exactly what paint scheme I wanted
on it and sent it to Airborne Replicas on August 28, 2004 to be
painted. Then in another great stroke of luck, I found out that
my fellow collector friend Steve Spatz was going to sell his Douglas
Factory DC-8-61CF in Trans Caribbean ‘Palm Tree’ Livery. I immediately
contacted him and he was very kind in selling me this "Dream
Model." Even though I had one being painted in the Philippines,
at that time in the same exact livery, I decided to buy Steve’s
Beautiful Model just in case the Philippine paint scheme didn’t
turn out very well. As it turns out, they did a fantastic job
of painting this model exactly as I had ordered. Thus, I am now
passing along the other Trans Caribbean DC-8-61CF to my friend
Dan Wells.
