DC-8 History: Garuda Indonesian Airways began services in 1949 at the time
when the Dutch East Indies ceased to exist and the country became the sovereign
Federal Republic of Indonesia. The formation & direction of Garuda was assisted
a great deal by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and the influence from the Dutch Airline
continued into the 1950s, 60s &70s. In fact, it was KLM who enabled Garuda
to expand their long haul Intercontinental Services by leasing them DC-8s to supplement
the one Factory Delivered DC-8 Garuda had acquired from Douglas. The DC-8 fleet
was utilized until 1980 when Garuda’s last DC-8 was retired and widebody DC-10-30
& 747s had taken over all of the long haul routes. Click
