Model History: I believe this was produced in the early to
mid 1960s by the Douglas Aircraft Model Shop. I Acquired it on
May 25, 2005 from my fellow collector & friend Steve Spatz
and co-own it with another collector friend & anonymous partner.
Many thanks to Steve for selling me & my partner these 3 Great
DC-8 Proposal Models!


A
Note About This Model: The
DC-8-62 never flew in the above livery. However, when Douglas
Aircraft was first exploring the DC-8 Super Sixties they did have
drawings, advertisements (see below) & I presume models done
in the older Ship One all white livery. As time grew closer to
the introductions of the new Super Sixties, DAC refined the House
Colors to incorporate bare metal wings and underbelly.

"Super 62 DC-8, an ultra-long-range transport, has
a six-foot greater wingspan for a new total of 148.4 feet. The
fuselage is 157.4 feet in length, 80 inches longer than that of
the Series 50 version. The three-foot wing tip extensions significantly
reduce induced drag under cruise conditions and also facilitate
additional fuel tankage.


The extension of the Super 62 fuselage, by adding 40-inch
cabin sections fore and aft of the wing, increases seating capacity
to 189 in all-coach configuration. Engine pods of new design augment
thrust and reduce drag by ducting turbofan air through the entire
length of the nacelle. Redesigned pylons for the ducted fan engines
reduce interference drag to a minimum.


Super 62 is capable of carrying it full capacity of passengers
and cargo from central European points to the west coast of the
United States with ample fuel reserves. Maximum range with full
payload is 6000 statute miles.


First flight of the Super 62 occurred August 29, 1966,
and initial delivery to an airline [Scandinavian Airlines System
(SAS)] was on May 3, 1967. The long-range jetliner entered commercial
service May 22, 1967."
