DC-8 History: Alitalia, the Flag Carrier for Italy, was an
Original Delivery Customer of the Douglas DC-8. Alitalia took delivery
of 4 DC-8-42s (later converted to more advanced DC-8-43s) and 11
DC-8-43s – both types which were powered by 4 Rolls Royce Conway
Bypass Engines – one of the earliest types of commercial turbo-fan
engines. They inaugurated their DC-8 service on June 1, 1960 between
New York – Idlewild (now JFK) – Milan – Rome and Idlewild – London-
Rome. In the late 1960s Alitalia took delivery of 9 DC-8 Super 62s
and 2 DC-8-62CFs (Convertible Freighters) and utilized these ultra
long range aircraft into the 1980s.
