DOUGLAS DC-8 CURRENT OPERATORS & THE PRESENT STATUS OF ALL DC-8s PRODUCED

Listed below are the current operators of the DC-8 and a Summary of the Present Status of All DC-8s Built . Sadly, due to the global recession, several airlines reduced their DC-8 inventories which reduced the number of DC-8s in service from 112 in 2008 to only 69 today.  The largest reduction in DC-8's came from United Parcel Service who retired their remaining 39 DC-8s early (they had originally planned to operate their DC-8 fleet until approximately 2015).  Nearly all of the 69 DC-8s presently in service are Cargo Liners plus a few which are VIP/Business Jets. To my knowledge there are no DC-8s still in Scheduled Passenger Services. However, Air Transport International still has five DC-8-62/72CF aircraft configured in a Passenger/Cargo configuration for charters.

For those who are curious, of the 918 Boeing 707/720 commercial aircraft that were built (military versions not included) there are only 17 of these aircraft that are still in active airline service (cargo/passenger) in comparison to 69 DC-8s. This is a further testament to the DC-8's reliability & longevity.   Long Live The DC-8!
